I could see the whole arc with all its colours quite vividly.

By the time the camera was ready, the sun was beginning to dull and the rainbow starting to fade. My stepfather, then courting my mother used to take us across the river to New Holland for a day trip. The car and the dog would come too. We always had a fun time but I never did travel very well, queasy tummy over that short stretch of water. Often the ferry would lurch to a stand still hitting a sand dune on the way. Sometimes stuck for ages. We always returned home in the dark on the last ferry, it seemed so late to us as children.

The ferry was a coal-fired paddle steamer and was the last paddle steamer to cross the Humber and the last operational paddle steamer in the UK before it was withdrawn in 1978. Her resting place is Grimsby and apparently a floating restaurant.

Now, of course the Humber Bridge crosses the divide, but has become a 'White Elephant', costing huge amounts of money to the local tax payers. Perhaps its time to bring back the paddle steamers as an alternative mode of crossing the River Humber?

PS Lincoln Castle

This photograph courtesy of Ted Gator

Victoria Pier still remains in Hull, decked and flowered for visitors, a nice spot to look up and down the River Humber. It does tend to be like a rather large 'jumble sale experience', shopping in T.K. Maxx with clothes dotted all over the already crammed store. Access with wheelchairs and buggies is impossible down the narrow aisles full of trolleys spewing clothes. If you are an unusual size.....very small or very big T.K. Maxx is like an Aladdin's Cave, although you have to hunt for standard sizes. I have found that if you are patient and are prepared to rake....you WILL get yourself a super bargain...

Most parents like myself, tend to drop children at school and then make a quick dash to the town to shop, childless and stress free. Time is ALWAYS limited and always precious. I shall NEVER shop first thing in the morning at T.K. Maxx in St Stephen's Shopping Centre, Hull again.

Can you believe how ridiculous this is..... the changing rooms do not open until 10.30 am in the morning!!!! Have I missed something here, isn't this a clothes shop, selling to the public, and opening at 9.00 am? What an absolutely ludicrous situation. When I asked an assistant, the curt reply was Head Office were not prepared to put extra staff on for this purpose???? The assistant also very professionally told me that "I need to go to the toilet" !!!!! (did I really need to now that!)

So me and my trolley load of bargains never made it to the changing rooms, or the unmanned tills, my money was better spent in Dorothy Perkins.

Thumbs DOWN T.K. I discovered that Gwenap was a high class knicker shop selling kinky trinkets and naughty underwear. Over the years the shop displayed large provocative banners across the entrance. Some very blatant and all to see very clearly whilst waiting in cars for the lights to change onto Princes Avenue. They are still doing so today, just like the picture above alternative words used in the past such as:- "Knickers to the lot of you", "Bent Politicians welcome here"!

In the eighties apart from Midland Street sex shop, Gwenap appearred to be the only other shop selling anything 'sexual'. In all the years living in this area, I can only claim to have shopped there once. I bought chocolate nipples, hilarious at the time! Hannah, our good friend and babysitter had mentioned Da Gianni in the past but I had not really paid much attention (shame on me!).

By pure coincidence, the Saturday evening we had arranged for Hannah to babysit, we spent that morning with two of the restaurants' employees....who just happened to be parents of one of Raffi's nursery school friends, lovely Melanie. We had chatted in the morning about the restaurant and I thought it would be perfect to take Eric there for a meal. We both adore Italian food and this place was not to far from home and fortunately they had a table available for us.

My first impression was WOWWW, really, the sight that greeted me can only be described as ten foot leaping flames either side of the entrance door. Spectacular and certainly a "head turner" for the numerous people frequenting this cosmopolitan area of Hull. Always known for its cafe bar culture, many pubs and general rowdiness and increasing at an alarming rate. The crowds were overspilling onto the pavements giving an almost Mediterranean feel (apart from the weather that is!!). Great for the regular diners and drinkers but I guess not so great for the locals living close by.

Da Gianni have got it just right. They ARE imitating the Mediterranean outdoor eating, cafe bar culture, and successfully beating the weather with huge magnificent outdoor heaters. Absolutely perfect for free advertising as people have to look..well done Da Gianni.

Once inside, ten minutes earlier than our booking time of nine oclock, it turned out to be no problem for the staff and sat down immediately at a spacious table near the bar. The restaurant operated 2 sittings, one at seven and one at nine. The seven o'clock diners were just finishing, there was a warm level of noise with piped music and gentle chatter.

By nine thirty the place was virtually full of noisy yelling people. It was a nice atmosphere but not really good for intimate conversation.

The service excellent, as was the food, certainly worthy of A class Council rating, not B class as quoted on the door!

The waiters, very attentive, all male, but not Italian!

The outdoor area with its leaping flames was truly amazing to see from the roadside. It was even better experienced close up. We stood outside and people watched whilst our food was being prepared, enjoying the warmth from the massive heaters. You could have imagined very clearly somewhere with sunnier climes, the only difference was that all the girls in their summer frocks were catching a major chill from the British weather in the pub outside next door!

Nice one Da Gianni what a great way to make the heads turn.

Now to the food, very quickly our plentiful food arrived, piping hot and looked extremely appetising. Although I did think the green salad was rather unimaginative along side such splendid dishes of Prawns, Mussels, Pate, Pizza and Lasagna. Percival Binks and seated 1,200 in the stalls and a single balcony.

The tower was one of the city's earliest and most luxurious cinemas.

The opening night back in 1914 consisted of an orchestra who entertained guests before they settled down to watch a black and white silent film. Sound equipment was introduced in 1929.

Sadly, in September 1978 the Tower closed as a cinema and was used for different ventures. By 1983 The Tower began its life as a busy nightclub and fun pub - both uses taking its toll on the once lush, extravagant interior.

Many people in Hull will remember those 80’s years of “Tower for an Hour”! “Grab a Granny Night”! and all the wacky outfits and ear bashingly overloud music!

Now in 2009, The Tower (renamed-Club Rio), has become a nightclub again, with dancing Brazilian-style carnival queens, palm trees and a 25ft waterfall cascading down behind one of the bars.

It is great to see “The Tower” is still entertaining the people, different time, different style but entertainment all the same. I have good memories of this building, spent time there, it was a wild place…male or female the place was, and I guess still is… a great place to go. As I have got older, I seem to be able to appreciate other things about this magnificent imposing building. There are some beautiful features worth mentioning.

At either end, there are large windows above exit doors. Perched on the roof are beautifully decorated domes of green and cream mosaics with bands of gold glass. They have not always been there. The twin domes were removed around 2005 as part of the Anlaby Road facelift. Hull City Council launched legal action against the owners of the listed building and the domes were replaced and restored to their original glory.

Also to catch the eye, looking out from the top parapet, a bare breasted female can be seen watching the passing traffic.

Do you have fond memories of “Tower”? (Repost)
'Ave ya gorra 'ull accent?!!

Many moons ago, when I was growing up, my mother imprinted into my brain the importance of good speech and elocution. She would often be referred to "as someone who spoke the Queen's English"! (Rather posh!).

By the time I reached my rebellious teenage years I had adeptly mastered the art of having 2 ways of speaking…. one for my mother, not drooping any letters, never saying what, and always maintaining eye contact! The other for my school friends, where I fell into "'ull speak" (The art of talking Hull slang) or sloppy talking as my mother would say, I did, quite easily. Peer pressure at school dictated how we all spoke, I never wanted to appear different in any way from my fellow school friends.

However, on leaving school I made a mental decision, my speech would be 'proper' and well elocuted from then on and not associated with anywhere geographically accented!

My accent has served me well in many ways, with building my confidence, different 'people' jobs, and the most noticeable, when Eric, my husband arrived for the first time in England from Lebanon, to Hull my hometown.

Eric's English was good when he arrived here, learnt in America/Canada and spoken fluently daily.

Unfortunately for him, all over the UK different accents and dialects can be heard, but Hull is the exception, we have a language of our own. A few local ideas

Sun in Hull…enough to put a smile on your face.

Three Thrifty Ways To Shop and
Four Thought Provoking Questions!

Your junk could be another man's treasure…

Now the weather has changed to typically cold and wet for this time of year I am reminded of our summer outings and wanted to share this with you.

In our depressing economy everyone is looking to save a few pennies or make some extra pocket money. I am no different, in fact I am a sucker for any sort of sale!

I regularly visit "Car Boot Sales." These are a mainly British form of market where private individuals come together to sell household goods.

I do so love the hustle bustle of these sales, the many chattering people, the constant searching through the goods, the bartering that follows, and the excitement at the end of the day, tired and worn out but elated and jubilant as you pack your car boot bargains! We don't need to travel to far to our nearest Car Boot Sale. Nearly every day of the week, within a short car journey there is a sale/market of some sort. Most kick off at around 6.00 or 7.00 am - You do need to get there early, we found if you do, you can choose the better pitches… i.e. for customers, sun, shade etc! The biggest Car Boot Sale we have is sited on an expanse of land used for our annual funfair. Many cars and stalls set up twice a week on this site. New, second hand, tat, food and rogue traders all operate at the market. There is even and out of date food stall - this is very popular!

The rogue sellers wander the market selling imported cigarettes. Some have bicycles to make a quick getaway. There are also numerous stall holders selling copy DVD's. Top movies that are not available here in the UK yet. The problem is so huge that the local police only periodically raid the market. The culprits just move elsewhere. The big attraction for younger members of the family is usually ice cream….sold from an ice-cream van, low quality, whippy foam!

I loathe it, Raffi will eat this enthusiastically even at 8.00 am in the morning!

Other Car Boot Sales we go to are often held in the playgrounds of schools and other community centres, or in grassed fields or pub car parks. Depending on where the sale is sited (in the city) will depend on how affluent buyers and sellers are. The more exclusive neighbourhoods tend to produce better quality items. To sell, you pay a nominal fee, here in Hull £6 a pitch. This includes space to set up a trellis table in front of your car. Then you can display your goods for sale. Entry to the general public is usually free, although sometimes a small admission charge is made. Anyone can sell their goods at a car boot sale, whether a first-timer, a regular, or a seasoned professional. Often home owners moving house sell at car boot sales to clear unwanted goods or perhaps goods from the home of a deceased relative.

I am truly amazed every week what people sell or expect you to buy and their brazenness at how they try and sell it! Do I really want broken crockery or a faulty light fitting? I think not. But hey, there are plenty that do!

I have found over the years, bartering for goods is common place and now almost expected. Perhaps because of the influx of different nationalities into this city, and their different attitude to buying and selling, has changed peoples view of the 'fixed price' syndrome. I am comfortable bartering here in the UK but find it hard abroad. High pressure selling techniques used in markets abroad is common place. It makes me very nervous!

Looking at the USA, it seems common place to hold garage/yard sales, I was aware of these, but not aware that in some cities, such as Beverly Hills, California, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania , homeowners are required to apply and pay for a yard sale permit, and even with that homeowners in Beverly Hills can only hold yard sales in the back of their homes.

Other sorts of sales that are generally peculiar to the UK are "Jumble Sales," an event at which second hand goods are sold, usually by an institution such as a local Scout or Brownie Group, school or church, as a fundraising or charitable effort. Local people are asked to donate goods, which are set out on tables in the same manner as Car Boot Sales, and sold to members of the general public. There is usually a charge of around 50p to enter the sale. Jumble Sales are becoming less prevalent in the UK, as Car Boot Sales and the World Wide Web enable people to sell their unwanted goods rather than donate them to charity…. …which leads me nicely into my final alternative place to shop!

In the UK we have a British Institution called "The Charity Shop". These are shops selling mainly second-hand donated goods/clothes to raise funds for their parent charities. Traditionally, charity shops used to occupy unpopular shops in low traffic areas, but now the majority are not only permanent, but are often in prime trading locations. We have 6 charity shops at the top of our street. Probably the most well know charity shop is Oxfam, first opened in 1947/48, in Oxford, England, and is still in operation today. Charity shops can be found on most high streets throughout the country.

Those were my Three Thrifty Ways to Shop…. and now

Four Thought Provoking Questions…

1. Where do you shop for your second hand bargains?
2. Is there a stigma attached to "buying other peoples clothes?"
3. Do you donate your clothes to a charitable cause?
4. Are you wearing anything second hand right now?

Well that is it, as always comments very much appreciated, have a great evening and thank you for reading.

Written By ~Sue Raphael's Mum~
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10997287681059267082noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717668903361910574.post-68475121190999901592008-12-29T09:53:00.000+00:002008-12-29T10:19:10.427+00:00Me and My Camera25th December 2008....the perfect Christmas present for me from Eric, my husband. I have been using a digital camera for 2 years and have taken masses of wonderful pictures, but now is the time to move on and upgrade. My knowledge of photography is fairly limited, I know my Sony Cybershot very well, inside out,so the obvious choice was to upgrade to another Sony. I was to upgrade to a Sony 350 DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera.

Eric went out before Christmas to buy my camera package. I was thrilled to open it Christmas Day but devastated to find that Eric had been sold the wrong memory card for my new toy! He returned to Curry's St Andrews Quay, Hull to be greeted by a very rude assistant who didn't seem to realise that they ("Curry's") had messed up our Christmas big time. Eric demanded a full refund due to their incompetence which they reluctantly agreed too.

Yesterday 28th December Eric and I went into Hull City Centre to Jessop's Camera Shop. "My" camera was there in the display case, I had set my heart on that model so went ahead and bought it. The service was excellent, the sales assistant went out of his way to give us everything we needed and more besides! One drawback, the only camera they had, was the one on display, Eric being Eric wanted a boxed set so we arranged to travel 9 miles over to Beverley to their other branch to collect it.

Today, 29th December 2008 the fun begins. Battery charged, correct memory card inserted and several pictures taken. What is that smell? I seem to say that to myself every day!!

I read the other day that HULL (UK), had a “very interesting smell, depending on the weather”!

I would not go so far as to say it was interesting, more like DISGUSTING!

Number one culprit are the Leather Tanneries.

Hides and skins seem to give off a lingering stench, particularly bad in the mornings around the Wincolmlee area of the city!

Cocoa Mills you would imagine, would smell yummy like chocolate! Unfortunately not, the burnt acrid whiff floats over Hull regularly and would put you off chocolate for life!

Linseed Oil extraction plants based in the East of the city, near the river, give off a very pungent smell blown across the city on windy days.

Hull used to be a fishing port, but no longer, instead, at high tide the smell of salty cold water fills your lungs - not sure if that is a nice smell or not - it’s a matter of opinion. Low tide smells pretty foul too!

I am horrified to find and smell this on the pavement..

....and this gross mound on the road!!

I later spotted the culprit!

Finally, a smell we are all greeted with every day we visit the town shopping. A sewerage smell emulating from the poor drainage system under the shops positioned at the top of Whitefriargate. The fumes are particularly noxious and nauseating.

So do you live in a smelly city?, I know do!!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10997287681059267082noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717668903361910574.post-16048302622367405922008-02-05T20:35:00.002+00:002009-01-30T16:21:01.980+00:00What is Poi Spinning?
WELCOME TO MY BLOG POST

A short insight into a hobby I have, enjoy!

I had no idea what "Poi Spinning" was until August last year when my eldest daughter, Sally returned from a music festival with a pair in hand.

The definition given, is a beautiful, highly visual performance art in which you create mesmerising patterns of circles around your body, accompanied by much "ooing" and "aaahing" from anyone standing watching you close by. The circles are created by trails of fabrics or fire, attached to the 'Poi' which you spin in stunning complex patterns as you dance.

Poi spinning originated in New Zealand, performed by the Maori people to increase upper body strength but now it is practised all over the world and by many different cultures.

Poi spinning is not only fun and visually entertaining but it can also offer you the following benefits:-

Improved left and right brain function.

Greater spatial awareness.

Helps prevents and manage high blood pressure.

Boosts energy levels.

Helps manage stress.

Releases tension and frustration.

Improves the ability to fall asleep quickly and sleep well.

Improves self-image and boosts confidence.

Counters anxiety and depression and increases enthusiasm and optimism.

Increases muscle strength, giving greater capacity for other physical activities.

Provides a way to share a fun activity with family and friends.

Good for the heart.

Its great fun!

My enthusiasm for this sport was addictive so felt it would be a great idea to start a group for interested Poisters, to practice together on a regular basis.

This was the founding of "Poi Practise in Hull".
