| From Hull is Never Dull! |
Kingston Upon Hull is unique, we have our very own independent telephone network company, and remains the only locally operated telephone company in the UK! This means we have the privilege of using cream coloured phone boxes...or mucky cream if you are looking at my picture!
Added to that no crown appears on our phone boxes like the red ones elsewhere in the UK!

A phone box!
They don't exist here any more.
That pic sent me back to a time when there was a queue waiting to use the 'fone' and when it was my time to have my afternoon chat with my best friend [who I hadn't seen for at least half and hour] I'd turn my back on the queue so as not to see their impatient glare.
Do phone boxes still smell of stale cigarette smoke?

Hiya Catsmum, good to see you :-)....in answer to your question, YES they still smell of ciggy smoke but there does seem to be more ventilation in the more modern ones! This one appears to be rather ancient!

I lived In North Hull for several years during the 1990's and enjoyed my time there very much. I recall the Cream-coloured(Yellow???)'phone boxes very much and thought that Hull was pretty special considering It had a very unique public telephone service unconnected to British telecom (Kingston Communications). My home Telephone was also supplied by Kingston. With regards to the statement that such 'phone boxes smelt of Cigarette smoke,I'm afraid that the only thing that I ever smelt was Wee! These days,telephone boxes are very flimsy affairs made almost entirely of glass and with an 18-Inch gap around all four sides - both of which are presumably to prevent people using them as toilets!
